Chessboard Beach

It has been reported in Tiandong County, Guangxi, that a flat and intricately grid-like magical chessboard beach has been discovered in Dongtian Mountain Village.

The “magical chessboard” is situated on the Lingqi River beneath Lotus Mountain, the highest peak in Tiandong County, just 3 kilometers from the town government of Napo and 40 kilometers from Tiandong County’s urban area.

The chessboard beach covers an area of over 2,000 square meters. The “chessboard” consists of stone slabs, each about 1 square meter in size, that rise above the water surface. Each slab is surrounded by gullies approximately 30 centimeters deep and wide, which crisscross and interconnect. These gullies are filled with flowing water year-round, allowing people to walk freely across the “chess pieces” without getting their feet wet.

Experts believe that while water normally flows vertically, the water on Chessboard Beach flows horizontally, making it a puzzling mystery.
