The Baotan Township in the northern part of Luocheng is the central hinterland at the southern foot of the Jiuwanshan Mountains, where strata are fully exposed, well-developed, and exhibit diverse sedimentary facies types with typical markers. It is home to the oldest Proterozoic Sinian System strata in South China. Here, the rare Proterozoic komatiite rock with spinifex texture—seldom seen anywhere else in the world—miraculously outcrops. Experts have pointed out that the discovery of komatiite rock in Shitan Township is only the second such occurrence globally. It holds significant academic value for current international and domestic research on the early evolution of South China’s Earth, the development of the crust and mantle, the transformation patterns of oceanic and continental crusts, as well as the exploration of various mineral resources. Over the past decade, komatiite rock has attracted experts from more than 10 countries, including Sweden, the United States, Canada, Australia, and Singapore, for investigation. Numerous domestic geology colleges frequently bring students here for fieldwork and specimen collection. Shitan has become a destination for scientific research, teaching, and international academic exchange, hailed by Chinese and foreign experts as a “natural geological museum.”
