Songkran isn’t wild enough? Spain’s wine fight is absolutely crazy!

Spain has many quirky festivals—aside from the tomato-throwing La Tomatina, there’s also a Spanish version of the water fight. But instead of water, they throw buckets of wine. On June 29 every year, in the town of Haro, Spain, a wine festival is held. During this period, the whole town is filled with the aroma of wine, and parties go on non-stop. It’s one of the most fun and entertaining festivals in Spain.

Haro is located in Spain’s La Rioja region and is famous for its wine production. Here, wine is even cheaper than water, so instead of a water fight, they have a wine fight. The day also coincides with the religious feast of Saint Peter, which is a major celebration eagerly awaited by locals. During the festival, thousands of tourists flock to the town for a pilgrimage. On the night before the wine battle, the town holds a large and lively party where people of all ages celebrate all night long, kicking off the wine-throwing festivities.
