Introduction

Located beside Zhu Mountain on the banks of the Mandarin Duck River. White Crane Mountain is one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Wuzhou, formerly known as "Crane Ridge Sunset Glow." When the morning sun just rises from the Xijiang River and the river mist has yet to clear, viewed from across the river, the graceful and elegant White Crane Mountain resembles a fairy lying quietly in the clouds and mist. When the setting sun shines from the west, the glow casts the reflection of White Crane Mountain into the emerald-green and sparkling Gui River, like a beautiful maiden gazing into a mirror as she dresses her hair. After Wuzhou was opened as a treaty port in the 23rd year of the Guangxu reign during the Qing Dynasty (1897), Britain erected boundary markers of the British Empire around White Crane Mountain and built a consulate. The Wesleyan Mission, the Bible Society, and the American Bible Institute were also located here. A wooden sign prohibiting visitors from climbing the mountain was placed at the foot of White Crane Mountain. In the spring of 1918, several soldiers from the Guangxi Army climbed the mountain for leisure, and the British consul released dogs to attack them. The platoon leader of the Guangxi Army killed the foreign dog in self-defense but was later coerced by the British consulate and shot dead to compensate for the dog’s life. Following a wave of anti-British sentiment, Britain returned White Crane Mountain in 1928.
