Sacred Heart Cathedral is grand in scale and is the largest stone-structured Catholic church in the Far East.
Sacred Heart Cathedral is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Sacred Heart Cathedral is situated on Yide Road in the center of Guangzhou’s urban area. It is the most magnificent and distinctive Catholic cathedral in the Guangzhou Diocese. Built in 1863 and completed in 1888, its construction took 25 years, and it has a history of over 130 years. As all the walls and columns of the cathedral are built from granite, it is also known as the “Stone House,” “Stone House of the Sacred Heart of Jesus,” or “Stone House Catholic Church.” It is a Provincial Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
The total construction area of the cathedral is 2,754 square meters, with a width of 35 meters from east to west and a length of 78.69 meters from north to south. Its height from ground level to the top of the spires is 58.5 meters. The cathedral is built in the Gothic style and can be compared to the world-famous Notre-Dame de Paris in France. Throughout the year, the surroundings of the Stone House Catholic Church are filled with evergreen trees and vibrant flowers. Currently, believers and tourists from around the world visit the Stone House.
The front of the cathedral features a pair of towering twin spires that rise high into the sky. On the west side of the middle section between the spires is a large clock, while on the east side is a bell tower housing four large bronze bells imported from France. Inside the church, the vaulted ceiling is formed by pointed ribbed arches. The stained glass windows on the front facade and surrounding walls are all in a trefoil pattern, and all doors and windows are fitted with colorful, deep-toned red, yellow, blue, green, and other hues of glass manufactured in France. This glass prevents strong outdoor light from entering, keeping the interior lighting soft year-round and creating a warm, solemn religious atmosphere. Throughout the year, the surroundings of the Stone House Catholic Church are filled with evergreen trees and vibrant flowers. Currently, believers and tourists from around the world visit the Stone House.
