Ding Ruchang’s Former Residence (Ding Clan Guanglu Ancestral Hall)
Ding Ruchang’s Former Residence (Ding Clan Guanglu Ancestral Hall) is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Ding Ruchang’s Former Residence, also known as Ding Mansion or Ding Clan Guanglu Ancestral Hall, is located on Yuanding Road in Rongcheng District. It was built by Ding Ruchang, a representative figure of the Westernization Movement during the Qing Dynasty. A native of Fengshun, Ding Ruchang served as the Suzhou–Songjiang–Taicang Circuit Intendant, Governor of Jiangsu, Governor of Fujian, and concurrently as Minister for Foreign Affairs. In his later years, he resided in Rongcheng, Jieyang. To commemorate his father, “Guanglu Gong,” he constructed this grand ancestral hall in the fourth year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1878 AD).
The entire complex covers an area of 6,100 square meters, with the main buildings facing south. Originally, in front of the gate, there were a screen wall, a moon pond, and flagpole stands symbolizing the owner’s high official rank. The main hall of Ding Mansion has three sections, flanked on both sides by two straight lanes that serve as protective corridors. Each lane contains four small courtyards, each featuring unique and elaborately carved woodwork. The architectural layout of Ding Mansion, referred to by locals as “a hundred birds paying homage to the phoenix,” consists of ninety-nine and a half rooms—the so-called “half room” being a basement within the mansion.
Ding Ruchang’s Former Residence is the only surviving residence of Ding Ruchang, a pragmatic leader of the Qing Dynasty’s Westernization Movement, across the country. The building boasts a grand scale, practical and elegant layout, exquisite wood carvings rich in local characteristics, and retains the traditional architectural structure, materials, and craftsmanship of the Chaoshan region. The painted beams, roof ridges, and clay sculptures incorporate some Western architectural motifs. This fusion of Chinese and Western elements pioneered the adoption of Western architectural techniques in the Chaoshan area, making it highly representative and of significant research value in the region’s architectural history.
The Ding Ruchang Memorial Hall is housed within Ding Ruchang’s Former Residence. Many of his memorials and articles, which had considerable impact on China’s politics, economy, and culture, were written here, and some physical artifacts remain, holding great value. The exhibition displays three sections: Ding Ruchang’s life, evaluations of Ding Ruchang, and his descendants. With over 1,000 exhibits, including artifacts, documents, and photographs, it provides a comprehensive introduction to Ding Ruchang’s life, thoughts, political achievements, as well as his spirit of patriotism, love for his hometown, reform, and innovation. It holds significant historical and educational importance.
In May 2013, Ding Ruchang’s Former Residence (Ding Clan Guanglu Ancestral Hall) was designated as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
