Xia Wei Wang Village Filial Piety Archway

The Xia Wei Wang Village Filial Piety Archway is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Filial Piety Archway is located in Xia Wei Wang Village, Nanxi Town, Puning City. Facing west and situated eastward, it was “built by imperial decree in the lower settlement of Xia Wei Fort for Madam Yang, mother of the imperial scholar Wang Xuexiang” in the 45th year of the Kangxi reign during the Qing Dynasty (1706) (Volume 6, “Monumental Arches,” of the乾隆Puning County Annals), in recognition of the “mother’s chastity and the son’s filial piety” of Madam Wang Yang and Wang Xuexiang. Now fully preserved, it is a four-pillared, three-bay, three-story stone memorial archway, with the upper story featuring a hip-and-gable roof. The archway has an overall width of 5.35 meters and a height of 5.6 meters. At the very top is a plaque inscribed with the characters “Imperial Edict.” The front of the plaque is engraved with “Filial Piety Archway,” while the back reads “Granted in recognition of filial piety and chastity, established on the auspicious day of the 12th lunar month in the 45th year of the Kangxi reign.” Below the plaque, the crossbeam lists the names of officials from various ranks. The lowest crossbeam is inscribed with: “Madam Yang, wife of the recluse Wang Yuanchang, granddaughter of the licentiate Yang Yaoyang, daughter of the scholar Yang Zhuokun, granddaughter-in-law of the Song Dynasty Ministry of Rites Minister Wang Dabao (18th generation descendant), and mother of the advanced scholar Wang Xuexiang.” In 1988, it was designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Puning County.

Xia Wei Wang Village: The Xia Wei Wang (Xiwěiwng) administrative village, also known as Xiamei Village, is located 26.4 kilometers north of downtown Puning. It has a population of 4,000. During the Southern Song Dynasty, a branch of the Wang family settled here after coming from Wuyi Lane in Putian, Fujian Province. Because the area borders Jieyang to the northeast and was originally the tail end of the Lower She of Huangkeng District, and because there was another village called Xia Wei Zhang to the south, it came to be known as Xia Wei Wang. Xiamei is a phonetically derived and more pleasant-sounding name. The settlement is distributed in scattered clusters. There are 680 acres of arable land, mainly planted with citrus fruits.
