Coukeng Ancient Village

Coukeng Village was first built in 1804 and is located in Jingxiyuan Town, Jiexi County. It features well-preserved ancient residences with over 200 years of history, designed in the style of Suzhou gardens. The architecture combines the majestic and solemn grandeur of palace-style layouts with the distinctive elements of Chaoshan’s “Four-Point Gold” and “Descending Tiger” house styles, while also inheriting the enclosed courtyard tradition of Hakka roundhouses. At the same time, it skillfully incorporates the elegant charm of Suzhou garden design. Among its most distinctive structures are the “Seven-Door Tower in a Row,” “Three Walls Linked as Pearls,” and “House of Benevolence.” The layout follows patterns such as “Four Horses Pulling a Cart” and “Nine Halls and Eighteen Courtyards.”

Local villagers earn their income mainly through agricultural production, as well as cultivating tea leaves, plum trees, mountain ginger, and bamboo.

Coukeng Village has a winding stream that meanders along the mountain slopes, called Weng Stream. Legend has it that Weng Wanda, a Ming Dynasty Minister of War, was born in Wengxi Village downstream of Weng Stream.

The village is known for its pollution-free high-mountain tea and honey, both of which have a long history and enjoy widespread fame. Nestled amid green mountains and clear waters, the scenery—whether viewed up close or from afar—resembles an enchanting landscape painting. The narrow alleys built along the hillsides feel like stepping into a historical scroll glowing with the patina of time. With its pristine mountains, clear waters, blue skies, and white clouds, the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature has always been a source of pride for the people of Coukeng and has helped shape its reputation as an ecological brand.

The local villagers primarily earn income through agricultural activities, including the cultivation of tea leaves, plum trees, mountain ginger, and bamboo. In 2009, the village’s collective economic income was 38,000 yuan. In recent years, Jingxiyuan Town has vigorously developed eco-tourism, and Coukeng Village, as a revolutionary base area, has been rated by the Guangdong Provincial Tourism Bureau as the most beautiful rural destination in terms of natural ecology.
