The Hong Clan Ancestral Temple in Chao’an

The Hong Clan Ancestral Temple in Chao’an is a cultural relic protection unit of Chaozhou City.

The Hong Clan Ancestral Temple in Chao’an is located in Meixi Administrative District, Anbu Town, Chao’an County. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, it underwent renovations during the Qing Dynasty and the Republican era. The temple has two courtyards with a post-and-lintel wooden structure. The plaque above the gate inscribed with “Hong Clan Ancestral Temple” was written by Xia Maoxue, an official from the Ministry of Revenue in the Ming Dynasty, while the inscription on the back, “Plum Grove Through the Seasons,” was penned by Zhang Fengyi, a mid-level imperial official and vice minister of the Yunnan Circuit Intendant of Justice during the Ming Dynasty. About 5 meters in front of the temple stands a memorial archway, built with brick and stone, featuring four pillars and three bays. The archway’s plaque is inscribed with “Virtue Lasts Forever,” written by Lin Xichun, the left vice minister of the Ministry of Revenue in the Ming Dynasty. The back is engraved with “Filial Piety Is the Guiding Principle,” authored by Huang Cong, the Fujian Provincial Administration Commissioner in the Ming Dynasty. Inside the temple, there are two commemorative steles preserved: one erected in the 28th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1763) and another in the 12th year of the Republican era (1923).

In December 1987, the Chaozhou Municipal People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.
