Dongshan is a renowned tourist destination in Chaoyang, becoming a scenic site as early as before the Shaoxing era of the Song Dynasty. Around 1070, the Temple of Lingwei was built on Dongshan to enshrine Zhang Xun and Xu Yuan, two celebrated generals of the Tang Dynasty. At the end of the Song Dynasty, the Prime Minister Wen Tianxiang stationed his troops on Dongshan, where he paid homage to Zhang Xun and Xu Yuan at the Temple of Lingwei, composed the stirring poem “Qinyuan Chun,” and buried his exhausted warhorse on the hillside. To this day, the historic site of “Wenma Jie” (Wen’s Horse Mound) remains.
