Han Yuan Pagoda

Located on Turtle Hill on the southern bank of the Nan River in Zaopu Town, Chaoyang District, Shantou City, it faces Jinggang Subdistrict of Jieyang City across the river. It was advocated for construction by Feng Yuanbiao, the magistrate of Jieyang County during the Ming Dynasty, and the site was chosen within Chaoyang. The pagoda was first built in the seventh year of the Tianqi era (1627) during the Ming Dynasty and completed in the twelfth year of the Chongzhen era (1639), featuring an octagonal pavilion-style structure made of brick and stone. The pagoda faces southeast and is oriented toward the northwest, standing 43 meters tall. It is hollow, has eight sides and seven stories, and contains a spiral stone staircase that leads to the top. Each level has doorways opening onto the tower’s outer corridor. The pagoda gate is inscribed with the four characters “涵元宝塔” (Han Yuan Pagoda). The original copper finial at the top of the pagoda was damaged by lightning in the mid-1940s. From the top, visitors can overlook the Rong River. There are five well-preserved stone steles with inscriptions located to the south of the pagoda.
