Tomb of Master Dafeng

The Tomb of Master Dafeng is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The tomb of Master Dafeng from the Song Dynasty is located within the Dafeng Scenic Area in Heping, Chaoyang District, Shantou City. The tomb faces east and is built along the mountain slope. The mountain resembles a reclining lion, known as “Lion Mountain,” and the tomb is situated at the lion’s belly, covering an area of approximately 3,660 square meters. The tomb area is constructed from granite stones, and the burial mound is shaped like a steamed bun. The tombstone is 1.2 meters tall and 0.9 meters wide. The inscription on the tombstone reads “Tomb of Master Dafeng of the Song Dynasty,” with smaller characters on the upper and lower borders that state “Renovated on a lucky day in the winter month of the Bingwu year of the Republic of China” and “Representative Assembly of Charitable Halls from Various Counties and Cities.” In front of the tomb stand two vertical stone pillars inscribed with “The Master’s Noble Resting Place” and “The Renowned Peak of the Lion Mountain.” The entire tomb area is the core attraction of the Dafeng Scenic Area, exuding a solemn and dignified atmosphere, and remains well-preserved to this day. The tomb was originally built in the Dingwei year of the Jianyan era during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127) [there was previously a claim that it was built in the sixth year of the Xuanhe era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1124), but due to insufficient evidence, this claim is not adopted]. Due to the long passage of time, the tomb has undergone multiple renovations, with the most recent one taking place in 1981. During the renovation in the Bingwu year of the Republic of China (1946), the tombstone and ground were rebuilt using granite. A stone tablet from the 15th year of the Shunzhi era (1658, the year of Wuxu) was later discovered and placed in a separate pavilion, where it remains well-preserved.

On December 10, 2015, the Tomb of Master Dafeng was announced as part of the eighth batch of cultural relic protection units of Guangdong Province.
