Baode Ancient Hall is a long-established and renowned charitable institution in the Chaoshan region, often referred to as the progenitor of Chaoshan charitable halls. With a long history, grand scale, and high architectural standards, the hall largely retains the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty. The overall structure is simple and elegant, with a majestic sense of scale and an orderly sense of dignity. Architectural elements such as the pillars, bracket sets, and wooden spandrels exhibit distinct Ming Dynasty characteristics, while the craftsmanship of the hall doors, altar tables, clay sculptures of beasts on the roof ridges, and stone carvings on the wall niches is exquisite, featuring vivid colors. It can be regarded as a culmination of Chaoshan architectural decorative arts including ceramic inlay work, gold-lacquered wood carvings, stone carvings, and painted ornamentation. The hall also houses cultural relics such as ancient inscribed steles, Qing Dynasty embroidered Buddhist robes, Qing Dynasty blue-and-white porcelain incense burners, and portraits of the Great Master Dafeng, all of which hold significant historical research value. In recent years, during its preservation-focused restoration, the original architectural structures have been retained as much as possible, adhering to the “four preservation” principles for cultural relics: original form, original materials, original structure, and original craftsmanship. The restoration work has been meticulous, with fine craftsmanship in every aspect, laying a solid foundation for the effective protection and utilization of this ancient hall.
