Tomb of Du Guoxiang

The Tomb of Du Guoxiang is a cultural tourism attraction and a patriotic education base.

The Tomb of Du Guoxiang is located on Donggang Road, Fengxiang Subdistrict, Chenghai District. The structure features a circular base. Facing west, the tomb covers an area of 1,800 square meters (approximately 300 square meters before 1985), with a built-up area of 475 square meters. It was built on October 8, 1961, and renovated in 1985. The tombstone is made of gray granite, with a porcelain portrait of Comrade Du Guoxiang at the top front and the seven characters “Tomb of Comrade Du Guoxiang” engraved in intaglio below. The back of the tombstone features an inscription written by Chen Yuxian (Du Guoxiang’s wife), also engraved in intaglio, while “Tomb of Comrade Du Guoxiang” and the inscription were both handwritten by Wang Dingxin. On both sides of the tomb platform are two stone tablets inscribed with poems commemorating Comrade Du Guoxiang by Guo Moruo and Xu Dixin, with the text in intaglio and gilded. The tomb platform, pathway, and steps are all made of colored terrazzo (renovated in October 2005). The tomb platform and pathway are landscaped with trees and flowers, mainly cypress and snow plum. The tomb area is enclosed by a wall and iron railings, with an iron gate at the entrance of the pathway.

Comrade Du Guoxiang was from Lanyuan Village, Lianshang, Chenghai. He was born on April 16, 1889, and used several aliases including Du Shousu, Lin Baixiu, and Wu Xiaoxian. A member of the Chinese Communist Party, he was a renowned Marxist, historian, and educator. Before liberation, he served as a professor at Peking University, principal of Chenghai County Middle School, and principal of Provincial Jinshan Middle School, dedicating his life to revolutionary work and academic research. He passed away in Guangzhou on January 12, 1961.

In the summer of 1949, Du Guoxiang was appointed as a representative to the First Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he served as a member of the Central-South Military and Administrative Committee, a member of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government and head of its Education and Culture Department, president of the Guangzhou Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of the Guangzhou Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences, director of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Commission, vice president of the Central-South Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. During this period, he also held positions such as chairman of the Guangzhou Branch of the Chinese People’s Association for Peace and chairman of the Guangzhou Branch of the Chinese People’s Association for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries, as well as vice chairman of the Guangdong Provincial Society for Friendship with the Soviet Union, actively engaging in international propaganda efforts. On January 12, 1961, Comrade Du Guoxiang passed away in Guangzhou due to overwork. On August 27, 1962, the Guangdong Provincial Department of Civil Affairs approved his posthumous recognition as a revolutionary martyr.

The Martyrs’ Memorial Structure “Tomb of Comrade Du Guoxiang” is an important site for honoring revolutionary martyrs and providing citizens with patriotic, internationalist, and revolutionary tradition education. It currently receives approximately 3,000 visitors annually, including Party members and cadres, social groups, and young students.

Fengxiang Subdistrict: Since the establishment of Chenghai County in the 42nd year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1563 AD), the Fengxiang area has historically been the county seat. After Chenghai was restructured from a county to a city in 1994, and to streamline the administrative system, the establishment of Chengcheng Town was abolished with the approval of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Civil Affairs, and Fengxiang Subdistrict was established. It administers 11 neighborhood committees, with a population of over 120,000 (including migrants) living on more than 12 square kilometers of land. The ratio of industry to agriculture is 99.5% to 0.5%.
