Guishan Architectural Site

The Guishan Architectural Site is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Guangdong Province.

The ruins of the Guishan Architectural Site are located on the southern slope of Guishan Mountain, east of Beilong Village, Shanghua Town, Chenghai City. Dating back to the Han Dynasty, the site was discovered in the 1940s by Italian scholar M. Maglioni. In 1983, the Chenghai Museum conducted a survey, and from 1988 to 1993, four excavations covering a total area of over 500 square meters were carried out. Four house foundations were cleared. The first house foundation is located on the first terrace of the southern slope, where the remains of a rear wall built with stone blocks can be seen. It is 3 meters long and 1.7 meters high, with postholes found within the foundation. The second house foundation is on the third terrace of the southern slope, with a circular floor plan and a diameter of 3.4 meters. Its wall base is constructed with stone blocks, and there is a doorway on the south side. The third house foundation, partially overlapped by the second, has a concave-shaped layout facing south, with a width of 12.8 meters and a depth of 6.2 meters. The central part served as the main hall, flanked by side rooms, featuring rammed earth partition walls. The fourth house foundation is located in the western part of the third terrace, rectangular in shape, with a width of 10.7 meters and a depth of 4.8 meters. Both have rammed earth walls and partition walls. The third and fourth house foundations are equipped with drainage pipes. Additionally, corner wall foundations made of bricks and hardened living surfaces created by ramming were also found. The accumulations above the house foundations contain a large number of rope-patterned roof tiles and tubular tiles, as well as various types of scroll-cloud patterned tile ends and a small number of floor tiles. Excavated pottery includes cauldrons, tripods, jars, pots, basins, bowls, cups, bottles, kui vessels, spinning whorls, and net sinkers, many of which are glazed pottery. Pottery decorations are characterized by grid-stamped patterns. Ironware includes tripods, cauldrons, hoes, spades, axes, chisels, scrapers, knives, and nails. Bronze items include tripods, mirrors, arrowheads, and wuzhu coins. Other finds include agate beads and earring backs, among other ornaments. Research suggests that this site may have been the location of the seat of the Han Dynasty's Jieyang County.

In June 1989, the People's Government of Guangdong Province designated it as a cultural heritage conservation unit.
