Zha Xia Tin Hau Temple

Zha Xia Tin Hau Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Located in Chao Dong Village, Zumiao Subdistrict, it was built in the first year of the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1628), situated by Zha Xia Chong (Feng Shou Chong), originally on the east side of Gonghe Market on present-day San He Street. After the main hall of the Tin Hau Temple was demolished in the late Qing Dynasty, a smaller temple that still stands today was rebuilt. The eaves of the temple are adorned with exquisite murals depicting the Eight Immortals. It was once used as a warehouse by the city's paper box factory. According to legend, due to Foshan’s dense network of rivers, people were especially devout in worshipping the Tin Hau Goddess. On the 23rd day of the third lunar month, her birthday, the original grand temple would be decorated with lanterns, rituals would be held to thank the deity, firecrackers set off, fireworks launched, and operas performed, creating a very lively scene.

Lin Mo, also known as Mo Niang, was affectionately called “Auntie,” “Niang Ma,” or “Mazu” by the people. She was from Putian.

Born on the 23rd day of the third lunar month in the first year of the Jianlong era of the Song Dynasty (960) into an official family on Meizhou Islet in Putian County. She never cried from birth until she was one month old, hence she was named “Mo” (meaning silent), also called “Mo Niang.” Her great-grandfather Bao Ji served in the Zhou Dynasty as a military commander but abandoned his post to live in seclusion on Meizhou. Her grandfather Fu inherited the family’s merit and served as the Fujian Regional Commander. Her father Yuan was a patrol inspector of Fujian in the early Song Dynasty.
