Ip Man Hall

Ip Man Hall is located in a Lingnan-style antique building within Foshan Ancestral Temple. Established in November 2001 by the Foshan Municipal Bureau of Culture, Foshan Museum, and the Hong Kong Ip Man Hall Preparatory Committee, it opened to the public on November 9, 2002. The hall is mainly divided into three sections: Ip Man Hall, the Wooden Dummy Room, and the Wing Chun Disciples Exhibition Room, which include bronze statues, photos, and artifacts related to Ip Man, as well as photos and material from his disciples.

The grandmaster Ip Man (1893–1972), originally named Ip Kai-man, was from the Ye family on Sangyuan Lane, Fu Xian Road, Foshan. He began learning Wing Chun under the grandmaster Leung Bik in his youth and gradually mastered the art. Ip Man was the first master to publicly teach Wing Chun. After moving to Hong Kong in 1949, he dedicated over twenty years to promoting and popularizing Wing Chun. His school attracted students from all walks of life, both locally and internationally. Among his most famous disciples was Bruce Lee, who studied under Ip Man from 1954 to 1957 and helped spread Wing Chun around the world. Today, Wing Chun has spread from Foshan, China, to become one of the most widely practiced martial arts globally.

Ip Man

(1892 – December 1, 1972), a member of the Ye clan from Sangyuan, Foshan. His ancestral home was in Tan Tou Village, Lianxing, Luocun. His father moved to Sangyuan, Foshan, to escape the chaos caused by the “Red Turban Army.” At the age of seven, he became a disciple of Chan Wah-shun (Chan Wah-shun, an eminent disciple of the Nanhai Boxing King Leung Jan, previously worked in currency exchange and was nicknamed “Money Changer Wah”).
