The Ancient Hu Clan Ancestral Hall Complex

The Ancient Hu Clan Ancestral Hall Complex is a cultural relic protection unit of Guangdong Province.

The Hu Clan Ancestral Hall (including the Memorial Hall of Hu Mianzhai, the Chunlin Hu Ancestral Hall, the Hu Clan Family Temple, the Stone Academy, and the Tomb of the Loyal and Heroic) is situated in Shitou Village, Lanshi Town, Shiwan District. It is a family ancestral hall building originally constructed in the fourth year of the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty (1525), serving as a sacred place for the Hu clan to honor their ancestors and virtuous forebears. Renovated during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, it forms a grand complex of four parallel structures with a front plaza, exuding a majestic, solemn, and orderly atmosphere. From left to right, they are the “Memorial Hall of Hu Mianzhai,” the “Chunlin Hu Ancestral Hall,” the “Hu Clan Family Temple,” and the “Stone Academy.” All feature flush-gable roofs, and their main buildings consist of a three-courtyard layout in a quadrangle formation, including the entrance gate, front hall, and main hall. The latter two courtyards are each three bays wide and deep, with a mixed beam structure of raised beams and through-tenon work. The total area spans 2,484 square meters. The ancestral hall records the glory and traditions of the family, standing as its sacred sanctuary. As a symbol and emblem of the clan’s long history and traditional culture, it holds unparalleled influence and historical value.

The middle two halls are slightly taller, with consistent architectural styles, exquisite craftsmanship, and ornate decorations, showcasing the remarkable architectural skills of ancient Chinese laborers. The front eaves corridors of the entrance gates are built on stone plinths resembling study platforms, and the beams are adorned with intricate high-relief carvings of figures and floral motifs, finely detailed. The rear two courtyards are set on progressively elevated stone bases, with the front hall courtyard featuring a four-pillar, three-bay, sky-piercing stone memorial archway. The Hu Clan Family Temple bears the inscriptions “Home of Loyalty, Filial Piety, Chastity, and Heroism” and “Pillars of the State and Eminent Scholars,” while the Chunlin Hu Ancestral Hall features “Ancestors, Father and Son, Brothers, Uncles and Nephews—All Local Worthies” and “Scholarship and Statesmanship.” Inside the Hu Clan Family Temple, there is also a stele known as the “Hu Clan Family Temple Stele,” documenting the clan’s lineage and the management of ancestral hall properties. The two side halls, which resemble ancestral shrines, are smaller in scale and less ornate than the central two. According to the Guangxu-era "Shitou Hu Clan Genealogy," in the early years of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty, the second-generation ancestor Chunlin Gong became wealthy through duck egg roasting and was nicknamed the “Hu Duck Clan.” The aforementioned central two structures are the ancestral halls of the founding ancestor and the second-generation ancestor, while the Stone Academy served as a place of study for members of the Hu clan. The sixth-generation ancestor of the Hu clan, Hu Tao, ranked first in the metropolitan examination in the ninth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty (1514), rose to the position of Minister of Rites, and authored the "Complete Works of Hu Wenmin Gong." He also had a larger ancestral hall built, known as the “Seven-Tiered Ancestral Hall,” which no longer exists. His son, Hu Yuexia, also achieved the status of a presented scholar (jinshi), styled Mianzhong and known by his literary name Mianzhai. He served as magistrate of Cixi and Yin counties, as well as an intendant in Guangxi.

The entire architectural complex remains well-preserved and represents the largest, best-maintained, and most exquisitely decorated family ancestral hall structure in the suburban area. It also boasts considerable historical and artistic value.

On November 8, 2008, the General Office of the People's Government of Guangdong Province issued the "Notice on the Announcement of the Fifth Batch of Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Units," in which the Ancient Hu Clan Ancestral Hall Complex was included as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
