Layered Greenery of the Yangtze

The Layered Greenery of the Yangtze is one of the New Ten Scenic Spots of Zhongshan City, located nine kilometers southeast of Shiqi, the city center of Zhongshan. The Layered Greenery of the Yangtze mainly refers to the Yangtze Reservoir scenic area, which includes six interconnected large water pits, seven mountain ridges and plateaus, and a dam that blocks the reservoir. It covers a catchment area of 36 square kilometers and has a water storage capacity of 50 million cubic meters. The top of the reservoir dam is over six meters wide and 330 meters long. Within the reservoir area, vast mountains and overlapping ridges stretch as far as the eye can see, with endless pine forests, as well as fir trees, camphor trees, and chinaberry trees — all bursting with vitality. Their deep green hues are mirrored in the lake, capturing the essence of the beautiful scenery known as “Layered Greenery.”

Among the surrounding slopes and hills of the lake, there are also many attractions such as Qiren Stone (Gazing Husband’s Return), Bao Ya Pond (Soaring Treasure Ducks), Long Dragon Pit Small Waterfall (Thousand-foot Flying Waterfall), and Anlong Pit Stone Corridor (Exhibition of Strange Rocks in Deep Valley).

Legend: It is said that three hundred years ago, an uncle and nephew surnamed Long came from their hometown in Jiangxi to reclaim land here. To show their enduring connection to their homeland, they named their settlement “Changgang” (because they had passed through a long line of hills when they arrived), and then used the homophone “Jiang” (river) for “Gang,” subtly referencing their ancestral home in Jiangxi. This is the origin of the name “Yangtze.”
