Zhongshan Hall in Beijing
Zhongshan Hall is designated as a patriotic education base.
Situated within Zhongshan Park on the west side of Tiananmen Square, Zhongshan Hall in Beijing was originally called the “Worship Hall” of the Altar of Land and Grain. It was built in the 19th year of the Yongle reign during the Ming Dynasty, and functioned as a venue for emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties to conduct rituals or rest during bad weather.
On March 12, 1925, Dr. Sun Yat-sen passed away in Beijing, and his remains were laid in state here for public memorial services. To honor this great leader, in 1928, the Nationalist government officially renamed the “Worship Hall” to “Zhongshan Hall,” and the Central Park was also renamed Zhongshan Park. To this day, “Zhongshan Hall” is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
Starting in 2000, many members of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) proposed transforming Zhongshan Hall into a patriotic education base dedicated to Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Zhongshan Hall has since become an important venue for the central government to hold memorial ceremonies for the birth and passing of Sun Yat-sen, as well as a meeting site for CPPCC members.
On November 12, 2002, the Beijing CPPCC recreated the “Sun Yat-sen and Beijing” exhibition at Zhongshan Hall, which has been open to the public on a long-term basis. In 2002, Zhongshan Hall was named a municipal-level patriotic education base by the Beijing Municipal Government.
