Yangtze Reservoir

Yangtze Reservoir is located 8.5 kilometers southeast of downtown Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province, to the north of Wuguishan Mountain. It is named after its location in the Yangtze Pit. The reservoir was completed in 1963. It has a catchment area of 36.4 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of 48.2 million cubic meters.

Legend has it that three hundred years ago, an uncle and nephew surnamed Long came from their hometown in Jiangxi to reclaim land here. To show their enduring connection to their homeland, they named their settlement "Changgang" (as they had passed through a long stretch of hills on their way), and then used the homophone "Jiang" (river) to subtly reference their ancestral home in Jiangxi. This is the origin of the name "Yangtze."

"Yangtze Layered Greenery" is one of the new top ten scenic spots in Zhongshan. It refers to the Yangtze Reservoir tourist area, which is located nine kilometers southeast of Shiqi, the city center of Zhongshan, and is a reservoir-centered tourist zone built on the northern side of the renowned Wuguishan Mountain anti-Japanese guerrilla base. The reservoir was largely completed in 1963 and includes six interconnected large water channels, seven mountain ridges and plateaus, and a main dam. It has a catchment area of 36 square kilometers and a storage capacity of 50 million cubic meters. The majestic dam is over 6 meters wide and 330 meters long. Looking into the reservoir area, you’ll see vast mountains, overlapping peaks, endless lush pine forests, as well as fir trees, camphor trees, chinaberry trees, and many other unnamed trees. The vibrant greenery, thick and velvety, reflects on the lake surface—this is the essence of the scenic beauty known as "Layered Greenery."

Yangtze Reservoir is truly a picturesque scene; exploring it immerses you in a boundlessly beautiful world. Nestled among high mountains, the reservoir winds its way from southwest to northeast, with water sections separated by bends. Gazing into the distance, the green mountains become hazy and indistinct under layers of misty clouds, creating an ethereal and dreamlike scene.

Thanks to the well-preserved natural environment of Yangtze Reservoir, every autumn in recent years, egrets have flown here for the winter. They stay for two to three months before returning to their northern habitats. During last year’s National Day Golden Week, nearly 2,000 egrets visited the scenic Yangtze Reservoir area, adding much vitality to the landscape.

Going further inside, you’ll find deep valleys and calm lakes—valleys within valleys, lakes within lakes. The deepest part of the water reaches over 30 meters, crystal clear enough to see the bottom and count the fish. Along the surrounding slopes and lake edges, there are numerous attractions such as Qiren Stone (Gazing Husband’s Return), Bao Ya Pond (Soaring Treasure Ducks), Changlong Pit Mini Waterfall (Thousand-Foot Waterfall), and Anlong Pit Stone Corridor (Exhibition of Strange Rocks in the Deep Ravine). Rocks stand in the water while water flows over the rocks—a scene beyond words. Under the water, carp leap through the waves; above the surface, birds skim the sky. Between the two mountains lies pristine, shimmering water. In this natural beauty where mountains connect with water, water meets the sky, and emerald waters ripple all year round in perfect harmony with the heavens, countless visitors have been enchanted.

Wuguishan Subdistrict: Wuguishan District is located in the southern part of Zhongshan City, covering an area of 100.84 square kilometers. It governs 4 village committees and 1 residential committee, with a registered population of 7,592 and a non-registered population of 15,160. In 2006, adhering to the scientific development concept to guide overall economic and social development, the district achieved new successes in economic construction, political construction, cultural construction, social construction, and party building, marking a strong start to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period. The annual gross domestic product reached 847 million yuan, and the total output value of industry and agriculture hit 2.82 billion yuan, representing year-on-year increases of 11.3% and 12.44%, respectively....
