Beiyue Guanyin Temple

Beiyue Guanyin Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhongshan City.

Beiyue Guanyin Temple is located at No. 1 Gangdongbeiyue Road, Aoshan Village. The temple was built during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, underwent its first renovation in the 35th year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign (1770), and its second and third renovations in the 5th year of the Republic of China (1916) and 1995, respectively. Inscribed steles within the temple document its history.

The temple faces east and covers a site area of about 1,000 square meters, with a built-up area of 498 square meters. It has three courtyards and three bays, with a central courtyard, and features a brick-and-timber frame structure. It is adorned with “pot-ear” firewalls, a double-dragon-pearl-style hard mountain roof, and three-cornered blue brick walls. The front eaves are decorated with wood carvings, brick carvings, murals, and calligraphy. On either side of the courtyard are corridors with hard mountain ridges, a classical-style ridge, double-eared gables, and a mixed beam-frame structure of raised beams and pierced rafters. The temple is decorated with wood carvings, murals, and plaster sculptures. On the right side of the courtyard corridor, four stone tablets engraved with inscriptions from the Qianlong era to the Republican period, documenting street surveys and temple renovations, are embedded in the wall.

Beiyue Temple serves as a public space for local villagers to worship, discuss community matters, and hold events. It stands as a witness to local customs and the evolution of rural social life, embodying the collective memory of the community.

Aoshan Village: Aoshan Village is one of the five major villages in Huangpu Town. It is located in the northeastern outskirts of Huangpu, bordering Wulan Village to the east, facing the Huangpu Waterway to the south and across from Xinsa Village and Shijun Village, sharing a mountain boundary with Zhenyi Village and Sanshe Community to the west, and connecting to Dayan Village via the Dakui Canal (Li Yu Zui) to the north. The village is connected to downtown Huangpu via Jinnong Road, Guanxian Road, Linglan Road, and Puzhu Road. The village government is situated on Jinnong Road in the Gangdong area.
