Zhongshan Art Museum

Zhongshan Art Museum is situated in Qijiang Park in the West District of Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province. It is the park’s main structure and the first art museum in the city’s history. Qijiang Park was originally the well-known Yuezhong Shipyard in Zhongshan. Symbolizing the city’s socialist industrial development, the shipyard began operations in the early 1950s and ceased production in the late 1990s. In May 2001, the Zhongshan Municipal Government transformed the former Yuezhong Shipyard into a public park. The site of Zhongshan Art Museum was formerly a factory building of the Yuezhong Shipyard. After the shipyard was converted into Qijiang Park, the municipal government decided to repurpose the factory into the art museum. Construction of Zhongshan Art Museum began in 2002, and it officially opened to the public on November 6 of the same year.

Zhongshan Art Museum has a total floor area of 2,500 square meters, with an exhibition space of 1,300 square meters and a total display line of 330 meters. The museum building was designed by experts including Dr. Yu Kongjian from Harvard University, blending avant-garde European aesthetics with post-industrial architectural elements. The two-story museum features an abundance of pipes, steel bars, and I-beams, using a striking color scheme of steel blue frames and bright lemon yellow walls—two highly contrasting hues—for its main design elements. Large floor-to-ceiling windows give it a distinctly European flair, while the exhibition halls and rows of moveable display panels on tracks lend the museum a highly contemporary feel.

Since its opening in November 2002, Zhongshan Art Museum has organized over 20 temporary exhibitions each year through various means such as hosting traveling exhibitions and collaborative shows—all free of charge. Utilizing the concept of "greater arts," the museum focuses its collection efforts on outstanding works by artists from Zhongshan across different eras. Through donations by participating artists and contributions from members of the public, the museum has gradually built up a collection of donated artworks by artists at various levels, with its collection functions steadily improving.
