The Zhongshan Martyrs' Cemetery is located in Changshapu Village, Nanlang Town. Built against a hillside, it was completed in March 1960. Facing east with its back to the west and overlooking the Pearl River Estuary, the cemetery covers a total area of 166,675 square meters. At the entrance stands a memorial archway inscribed with the eight Chinese characters “Zhongshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery,” written by Liu Tianfu. Along the wide memorial path, a Glorious Pavilion has been built on the right, and a flower trellis on the left. A small path leads directly to the Revolutionary Historical Relics Exhibition Hall, while the main path is centered around the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument. The monument is square-shaped, 10 meters high, with a base circumference of 20 meters. The inscription “Revolutionary Martyrs Monument,” along with the inscription text, was written by Lin Qiangyun; Ou Chu wrote “Immortal Glory”; and Tan Guiming inscribed “Heroic Spirit Lives On.” The tomb is large and domed, with a diameter of 15 meters, and houses the remains of 365 martyrs. Xie Liquan inscribed “Tomb of Revolutionary Martyrs” for the site.

As a national-level patriotic education base, a provincial-level protected revolutionary martyrs’ memorial structure, a municipal-level patriotic and Party history education base, and a key “Red Tourism” destination in Zhongshan City, the cemetery is situated approximately 1 kilometer southeast of the former residence memorial museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great revolutionary forerunner. It is easily accessible via the Beijing–Hong Kong–Macau Expressway and the Guangzhou–Zhuhai East Line from the city center, covering a distance of 25 kilometers. Travelers can also reach the site directly from the coastal expressway when heading from west to east, making transportation very convenient.

The Zhongshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery was initially constructed in 1958 and put into use in March 1960. Covering an area of 211.6 mu (approximately 140,925 square meters), the site includes structures such as a gatehouse, memorial archway, commemorative bronze statue, Revolutionary Martyrs Monument, Glorious Pavilion, Revolutionary Martyrs Tomb, and Revolutionary Historical Relics Exhibition Hall. The Revolutionary Martyrs Tomb enshrines the remains or ashes of 322 out of the 1,010 revolutionary martyrs who valiantly sacrificed their lives from the First Revolutionary Civil War, the Anti-Japanese War, the Liberation War, the Korean War, to the early period of socialist construction. These relics serve to “honor the martyrs and inspire future generations.”

Inside the Revolutionary Historical Relics Exhibition Hall, there are displays of 12 reconstructed wartime scenes, 237 photos (or pictures), 45 pieces of revolutionary historical artifacts, and over 10 types of promotional publications. The content of the exhibition hall is presented using state-of-the-art audiovisual and automated lighting technology, which is vivid, clear, and captivating. The exhibits detail how the people of Zhongshan suffered under the iron heel of imperialism externally and the oppression of the “three big mountains” internally, with the laboring masses struggling on the brink of survival. Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, they fearlessly fought against powerful enemies, one after another, with heroic struggle, composing moving and tragic chapters of battle with their blood and lives.

Since its establishment, the Zhongshan Revolutionary Martyrs' Cemetery has undergone more than ten renovations, expansions, and refurbishments. Currently, all buildings and the memorial path are paved with granite. The cemetery exudes solemnity and is shaded by lush green trees. Being situated against the mountain and near the sea, the air here is especially fresh, making it an excellent destination for remembering the martyrs, sightseeing, and leisure vacations.
