As Beijing’s 798 Art Zone and Songzhuang have become iconic representations of China’s openness to the world, their fame and influence have inspired many local governments across the country to follow suit and develop their own “art districts.”

As the hometown of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a great figure of the century, Nanlang Town has actively supported the development of the cultural industry by leveraging its superior cultural and geographical resources. It established the “China•Cuiheng Cultural and Artistic Creation Base” in Cuiheng Village. The creation base focuses on cultural and artistic production as its core, driving the growth of other cultural and artistic industries. It aims to create a cultural and creative industry cluster that integrates creation, exhibition, sales, and tourism, making a meaningful contribution to the development of Zhongshan’s cultural industry.

The first phase of the creation base includes the Cuiheng Art Museum. The China•Cuiheng Cultural and Artistic Creation Base is located in Cuiheng, the site of Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s former residence. The overall plan for the base is divided into three phases of construction. The first phase includes the Cuiheng Art Museum, situated within the Cuibi Garden residential community at No. 18 Shimen Road in Cuiheng, along with 19 artist studios on the museum’s second floor, covering a total area of 4,400 square meters. The second and third phases are planned to revolve around the original Shimen Primary School, the auditorium, and distinctive old houses in nearby villages. These will be restored, renovated, or rebuilt into unique artist studios and art museums. We hope this will create a clustering effect, forming an art experience and creation zone with beautiful natural surroundings, a strong rural flavor, and unique local customs. Artists will be able to truly integrate life experiences with artistic creation, further enhancing the emotional impact of their works. In the near future, with the completion of the base’s various construction projects and the improvement of supporting facilities, we believe this will become a cultural and creative industry cluster that integrates creation, exhibition, sales, and tourism.

According to the development plan of the creation base, the introduction of artists is divided into three phases. The goal is to initially attract 30 artists, then bring in 100 artists within one year, and aim for 200–300 artists within three years. Currently, the base has welcomed a number of outstanding artists, including Professor Guo Runwen, Vice Chairman of the Guangdong Artists Association, Head of the Oil Painting Department at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and oil painter; Professor Li Quanmin, Head of the Printmaking Department at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and printmaker; Professor Liu Shengyu, Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Artists Association, Head of the Fine Arts Department at Shenzhen University; Li Xiaolin, a fine arts teacher at Shenzhen University and a renowned Chinese sculptor; and Xue Jun, Secretary-General of the Guangdong Oil Painting Association, a fine arts teacher at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and an accomplished young oil painter.

In the future, in line with the development needs of the base, efforts will also be made to increase publicity through various means such as organizing art exhibitions, establishing a website, publishing journals, hosting art festivals, and founding associations. This will further enhance the base’s social visibility and promote its sustained and rapid development.

Cuiheng Village: Cuiheng Village is under the jurisdiction of Nanlang Town, Zhongshan City. It is located in the southeastern part of Zhongshan and also in the southeast of Nanlang Town. To the east, it faces the Lingdingyang waters of the Pearl River Estuary, across from Qi’ao Island in Zhuhai. To the south, it borders Jinding Town in Zhuhai. To the west, it lies against Mount Wuguishan, and to the northeast, it neighbors Yakou Village. The Beijing-Zhuhai Expressway runs east of the village. The Zhonggong Highway runs through the village. Cui Shan Road connects the Zhonggong Highway to the east and Chenggui Highway to the west, passing by the Yixian Reservoir. It is a key land and water transportation hub in the southeastern part of Zhongshan City.
