In Zhenyi Village, Huangpu Town, there is an ancient camphor tree that has been growing for over 500 years. On the ground, it has developed into two trunks, each so thick that it takes two people to encircle them. These may be two side branches that grew after the original main trunk broke off. In 2003, experts from the Zhongshan Forestry Bureau identified this tree as the oldest known ancient tree in Zhongshan City at the time. At that time, it was measured to be 18 meters tall with a crown spread of 21 meters. To date, the town, district, and village governments have invested 1.5 million yuan to develop a 30-acre mountainous area around the ancient camphor tree into the “Ancient Tree Park.” A legend surrounds this tree: in the past, the Huangpu area was once a vast ocean. A massive flood swept a man surnamed He and a woman downstream, and they floated to Zhenyi Village. There, they saw two ancient trees and each clung tightly to one, holding on until the flood receded. The two were thus saved, fell in love, settled down in the area, farmed the land, and started a family. To educate future generations and express gratitude for the trees that saved their lives, later generations named the two connected camphor trees the “Couple Trees.”

Zhenyi Village: Located on the outskirts of Huangpu Town, Zhenyi Village is the birthplace of Greater Huangpu. It dates back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty, boasting a long history and profound cultural heritage. The village is home to numerous historical relics and natural attractions, including an ancient camphor tree over 500 years old; a “Hundred Years of Glory” memorial archway bestowed by Emperor Daoguang of the Qing Dynasty during the Daoguang era; an ancient dragon boat called “Beixi Xiancong” that is nearly 200 years old; ancestral halls such as the He and Li Clan Ancestral Halls, the Shuaizhu Temple, and the Hongsheng Temple, built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties; and the entrance gate of the village committee building, which is also a former gate of a He Clan Ancestral Hall dating back to the Qing Dynasty.
