Hengmei Buyue Bridge

Hengmei Buyue Bridge is located in Hengmei Community, South District, Zhongshan City, Guangdong Province. Built in the 23rd year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1843), it is a single-arch stone bridge shaped like a crescent moon—hence the name “Buyue,” which means “Moonwalking.” The bridge spans the Maheng River, with a total length of 15.3 meters, a width of 2.4 meters, and an area of approximately 37 square meters. The entire bridge is built from 40 long flagstones forming the arch, with a span of about 10 meters and a height of around 7 meters above the water surface. The bridge deck is paved with seven bluestone slabs, each measuring about 4.8 meters in length and 0.3 to 0.37 meters in width. The bridge piers are made of granite, with ten steps at each end to the north and south. The northern side features a seal script stone engraving of “Buyue Bridge,” while the southern side has a clerical script stone engraving also reading “Buyue Bridge,” with the upper inscription “Daoguang Gui Mao” (the 30th year of Daoguang) and the lower inscription “Erected in the first ten days of winter, [name illegible].” During the Republican era, a gate was built at the village entrance by the bridge, and cast iron railings were added on the bridge deck, though these have since been removed. In 2004, the South District Office installed imitation Qing-style granite guardrails for safety. This bridge is one of the few surviving Qing Dynasty stone arch bridges in the area.
