Tomb of Chen Tianjue and His Wife
The Tomb of Chen Tianjue and His Wife is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhongshan City.
The Tomb of Chen Tianjue and His Wife is located on Jinzhong Mountain in Kuchong Village, East District, Zhongshan City. It was first built during the Song Dynasty and underwent renovations during the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, the 13th year of the Republic of China (1924), and 1990. The tomb faces east and is built against the west, with a circular flat surface in front of the earthen mound. The gravestone is 1.52 meters tall and 62 centimeters wide, with the following inscribed in intaglio: “Tomb of Chen Tianjue, a Song Dynasty imperial scholar granted the title of Court Political Gentleman, meritoriously matched with the virtuous Lady Luo, ancestral parents of the second generation,” along with a pair of intagliod stone couplets on either side. The upper line reads: “The heroic spirit lingers on Kuling Ridge,” and the lower line: “The great achievements guard Xiangcheng.”
Chen Tianjue, courtesy name Yuanying, also known as Xiangsou, was originally from Kuilou in Zhujixiang, Baochang County, Nanxiong Prefecture. He was born in the first year of the Yuanyou era of the Song Dynasty (1086). In the third year of the Shaoxing era (1133), he passed the local imperial examination, and in the eighth year of Shaoxing (1138), he was granted the title of imperial scholar. He served as a Court Political Gentleman overseeing six departments. He moved to Wenshun Township (present-day Zhongshan City) in Dongguan County, Guangzhou, where he established a settlement and continued to serve as the settlement’s official to protect the area and ensure the safety of the residents. In the 22nd year of Shaoxing (1152), Chen Tianjue proposed that Xiangshan Settlement be upgraded to a county for the benefit of the people. The magistrate of Dongguan County, Yao Xiaozhi, submitted his suggestion to the Song Emperor, resulting in the establishment of Xiangshan County by incorporating coastal areas from four counties. Chen Tianjue donated thousands of hu (a unit of volume) to build Xiangcheng (also known as Iron City). In the 26th year of Shaoxing (1156), he also donated funds to establish the Confucian school on Lotus Peak Mountain. Chen Tianjue passed away in the ninth year of the Chunxi era of the Song Dynasty (1182) at the age of 96.
In 1990, the Zhongshan Municipal People’s Government designated it as a cultural relic protection unit.
