Longrui Stone Watchtower

The Longrui Stone Watchtower is located in Longrui Village, Shaxi Town, Zhongshan City. It was first built during the Republican era (1927). Oriented from northeast to southwest, the structure has a square floor plan with a traditional hip-and-gable roof made of fir wood. The tower body is constructed from 27 layers of granite strip stones, divided into three levels, with walls 40 centimeters thick. There is a small door on the front, built above seven layers of granite strip stones. Except for the west side, each of the other three stone walls has a small window. All four walls are also equipped with small gun ports.

Originally built by local residents to defend against bandits and theft, this watchtower is one of the more uniquely designed and constructed with distinctive building materials among the watchtowers in Zhongshan City.

Longrui Village: Introduction to Longrui Village

Longrui Village in Shaxi Town, Zhongshan City, is located to the northeast of Shaxi Town, bordering Xiqu District of downtown Zhongshan City. It has a permanent agricultural population of 3,375 people and a total of 883 agricultural households. Originally part of Xijiao Township, Longrui Village was established around the end of the Southern Song Dynasty. Liu Ruxian, the second son of Liu Shaixiong, the prefect of Nanxiong, migrated from Zhujixiang to Tuguiling in Dongzhen, Xiangshan. By the end of the Southern Song Dynasty, his sixth-generation descendants, brothers Liu Zizhong and Liu Ziping, settled here together. Now in their 30th generation, the village was initially named Shengjiao’jiao (Raw Chicken Corner) due to a rock resembling a rooster at the coastal edge inside the village.
