Longtouhuan Ancient Village

Longtouhuan was established in the early Qing Dynasty. During the Yongzheng era, it belonged to Tun Village (which included both southern and northern stockades). In the early Qianlong period, it split off and was named Longtouhuan Village—the “village where twin dragons encircle, with heads and tails dwelling together”—a name that has been used ever since. The settlement is distributed in a clustered form south of Shijiao River, with buildings mostly being single-story houses of brick-and-wood structure. The main produce is rice, followed by longan, lychee, and sugarcane. There are enterprises such as the Longtouhuan Fermented Bean Paste Factory (formerly Lin Chengji Fermented Bean Paste Factory) and a garment factory. The renowned fermented bean paste product is exported to the United States, Canada, Australia, and various countries in Southeast Asia. It is also the hometown of the famous overseas Chinese leader Zhou Song and United Nations official Wang Ronghua.

On Beiji Street in the village stands the Beiji Temple, originally built during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty. Though small in size, the temple is simple and elegant in style, enjoys flourishing incense offerings, and enshrines the “Northern True Martial Deity, the Mysterious Heavenly Emperor.” Devotees come to worship here year-round in an unending stream.

Longtouhuan Village is located slightly west of the northern part of Shaxi Town, about 7 kilometers west of downtown Zhongshan. It has a permanent population of over 3,100 and a migrant population of about 2,000. The village was established in the early Ming Dynasty and merged with Longjuhuan during the Yongzheng era (1723–1735), forming Tun Village (divided into southern and northern stockades). In the early Qianlong period, it was named Longtouhuan Village, meaning “the village where twin dragons encircle, with heads and tails dwelling together.”

The permanent residents of the village mostly bear the surnames Zhou, Liu, Wang, Yang, and Hou.
