Zhuxian Cave

Zhuxian Cave is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Zhuxian Cave in Zhuhai, Guangdong, is located on the west side of Nanwan Avenue between Wanzi Town and Nanping Town. It boasts rugged rocks, verdant bamboo and pine, and meandering streams. With its lush groves and serene surroundings, it has become a blessed sanctuary often frequented by visitors from around the world. Legend says the Barefoot Immortal cultivated himself to enlightenment here, leaving a series of footprints on the stones. The homophone “foot” gave rise to the alternate name “Zu Xian Dong” (Foot Immortal Cave). It now primarily enshrines the Northern True Martial Emperor, hence also referred to as the Xuanwu Taoist Temple. It is one of Zhuhai’s key tourist destinations.

Originally called “Zu Xian Dong” (Foot Immortal Cave), the site was believed to be where “immortals roamed.” The cave entrance was said to emit auspicious clouds, and cranes often gathered there. In the fifth year of the Tongzhi era, a man named Yang Lannei inscribed eight large characters on a huge rock: “Cave Paradise” and “Cranes Gathering in Flight.” A barefoot immortal was also said to have attained enlightenment here, leaving his footprints on the “Dripping Rock,” hence the name “Foot Immortal Cave.” Later, because the area was covered with lush bamboo, and “foot” is a homophone for “bamboo,” it became known as “Zhuxian Cave” (Bamboo Immortal Cave).

Shenzhen faces Hong Kong across the border, and Deng Xiaoping drew a line that turned it into a Special Economic Zone. Zhuhai neighbors Macao, and with Zhou Enlai’s approval, the mountain stream water from Zhuxian Cave was used to create the first reservoir supplying water to Macao. As such, the location of Zhuxian Cave is also the sole current source of drinking water for Macao, as well as Zhuhai’s earliest natural ecological reserve.

Zhuxian Cave is situated in a feng shui treasure land, with the Left Green Dragon (General Mountain) on one side and the Right White Tiger (Jialin Mountain) on the other, backed by Thunder God Stone Cliff Mountain, forming a “throne” shape. Its unique charm and profound cultural heritage attract visitors from all directions. Natural landscapes inspire sketching, while shepherd’s flutes and mountain springs harmonize in a delightful symphony.

Zhuxian Cave holds great historical and aesthetic value. Here, visitors can admire scenic spots such as “A View from On High,” “Unvisited by Common Folk,” “Cloud Path,” “Path of Enlightenment,” “Purple Gate,” and “Peach Blossom Garden.” There are also 13 exquisitely crafted stone sculptures created by master artisans, including “Sleeping Child,” “Twelve Zodiac Animals,” and “Cave Tiger.” Ancient temples such as the Guanyin Temple, Eight Immortals Temple, and Earth God Temple are popular gathering spots for worshippers during holidays to burn incense, pray, draw divination sticks, and seek blessings.

Currently, Zhuxian Cave houses the Earth God Temple, Eight Immortals Hall, God of Wealth Hall, Three Pure Ones Hall, True Martial Hall, Foot Immortal Hall, and Guanyin Cave. These ancient-style structures bustle with visitors and have become known as the “Mysterious Heavenly Sacred Realm.”

Nanping Town: Located in the southwest of Zhuhai’s main urban area, Nanping Town is under the jurisdiction of Xiangzhou District, Zhuhai. The town covers a total area of 60.7 square kilometers, governs 9 communities, and has a permanent resident population of 20,555 and a migrant population of 73,593. Backed by the lush greenery of General Mountain and facing the rapidly developing urban area of Zhuhai, Nanping Town is separated from Macao by a narrow strip of water. It is 12 kilometers east of Jiuzhou Port and 30 kilometers west of Zhuhai Port and Zhuhai Airport. It serves as a key route from the urban area to Zhuhai Airport, Zhuhai Port, Wanzi, and the Hengqin Port.
