The Martyr's Tomb of Li Yujiao

The Martyr's Tomb of Li Yujiao is a cultural relic protection unit of Yanling County.

The Martyr's Tomb of Li Yujiao is located in Xiacun Township. Li Yujiao was a revolutionary martyr from Yanling, an outstanding pioneer during the Agrarian Revolutionary period, and an eminent early member of the Chinese Communist Party. He once served as the third County Party Committee Secretary of Yanling, the Propaganda Minister of the Southern Hunan Special Committee, and an inspector for the Provincial Party Committee. In 1932, while on a mission to report to the Hunan–Jiangxi Provincial Committee, he was ambushed and killed by the “Communist Suppression Volunteers” at Baishadun in Xiacun, Ling County, at the young age of 27. To commemorate this revolutionary martyr and honor his heroic deeds, a memorial tomb was built for Li Yujiao on the back of Laowu Village in Pingkeng, Xiacun Township. The epitaph on the tomb reads: “Once a man of great talent fell victim to calamity; now his heroic spirit lives on in this world.”

Xiacun Township: A township under the jurisdiction of Yanling County. In 1949, it belonged to Dingzhi Township; in 1950, it was part of Xiacun and Taiping townships; in 1958, it became Xiacun Commune; and in 1984, it was re-established as a township. Located in the southeastern part of the county, it is 58 kilometers from the county seat, covering an area of 174 square kilometers with a population of 8,000. The township government is based in Tongle. It administers 14 village committees: Tongle, Yunli, Jiufeng, Nihu, Pingkeng, Tianxin, Changyuan, Changxi, Dahengxi, Henggang, Dongkeng, Aotou, Qingsong, and Xiyuan.
