Former Site of the Affiliated Primary School of Beijing Normal University
The former site of the Affiliated Primary School of Beijing Normal University is a cultural tourism attraction.
The former site of the Affiliated Primary School of Beijing Normal University is located at No. 15 Nanxinhua Street and is a cultural heritage site under the protection of Xuanwu District.
It is a modern-era building, though the original extent is unclear. The school was originally established in 1901 as the “Wucheng Middle School,” renamed in 1908 to the Imperial Capital Advanced Normal School, changed to the Imperial Capital Higher Normal School after the founding of the Republic of China, and in 1923 became Beijing Normal University. The surviving structures, from south to north, are the T-shaped Building, the Library, two office buildings, and two dormitory buildings. The T-shaped Building served as a dormitory, built in the early 1930s, with a “convex” floor plan, three stories, and a brick-concrete structure featuring blue bricks and cylindrical tiles. The Library was built in 1923, also with a three-story brick-concrete structure and a main facade facing north in the Western classical style. The two office buildings are remnants of late Qing Dynasty architecture, while the two dormitory buildings are three-story brick-concrete structures with sloping roofs and a simple, dignified exterior.
