Temple of Empress Wu

Located on Xieshan Peak in Shalong Village, about 3 kilometers south of the seat of Chejiang Town Government, the existing main hall was rebuilt in 2002. It is the only temple in Hengnan County dedicated to Empress Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in Chinese history.

Located in Chejiang Village, Chejiang Town, with its current structure being a modern reconstruction.

Wu Zetian (624–705) was the only female emperor in Chinese history, posthumously honored as the Sacred and Divine Emperor of the Wu Zhou Dynasty. Her birth name was Wu Meiniang, which she changed to Wu Zhao (zhào) upon ascending the throne, meaning “the sun and moon shine over the earth” (an alternative character, 瞾, implies “two eyes shining over the heavens”). She was from Wenshui in Bingzhou (present-day Wenshui, Shanxi). Her reign used the title “Zhou,” not “Tang.”
