Gaoling Liu Clan Ancestral Hall

The Gaoling Liu Clan Ancestral Hall is a cultural relic protection unit of Hunan Province.

The Gaoling Liu Clan Ancestral Hall is located in Guan Town, Hengnan County, Hengyang City. Built on Longxing Mountain, it faces south with its back to the north. Ancient trees stand like armrests on either side, giving the impression that the hall is seated on a “dragon throne.” The architecture features exquisite composition and masterful craftsmanship, combining intricate carvings with bold, rustic elements. Inside the ancestral hall, there are 36 dragons and 12 phoenixes. The latticed ceiling of the front porch in the first bay is inlaid with multicolored porcelain plates, a feature that is truly unique in our city. The structure is supported by 28 wooden (or stone) pillars, symbolizing the gathering of the 28 lunar mansions in the heavens above the ancestral hall. The overall structure is grand and imposing, inspiring a sense of awe.

In March 2019, the Gaoling Liu Clan Ancestral Hall was included in the tenth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units in Hunan Province.

Established as Guan Town in 1953, it was merged into Jiulong and Guanxi Townships in 1956, came under the administration of Jiangkou Commune in 1958, was split off as Yangwu Commune in 1961, and reinstated as Guan Town in 1984. Located in the southeastern part of the county, it is 44 kilometers from the county seat, covers an area of 84 square kilometers, has a population of 44,000, and has its town government stationed on Guanshi Street. The Heng’an Highway passes through the town.
