Shangfeng Temple

Shangfeng Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanyue District.

Situated above Gaotai Temple and ten kilometers from Nanyue Temple, it is one of the earliest ancient temples on Mount Heng. Before the Sui Dynasty, it was called Guangtian Guan and was revered by Taoism as the 22nd Blessed Land. To the upper right of Shangfeng Temple is the Sunrise Viewing Platform, and to the upper left is Zhurong Peak. Behind the Zhurong Hall on the peak lies the Silent Rock, where a protruding boulder resembles a giant turtle struggling upward, known as the “Golden Turtle Paying Homage to the Sacred.” Not far below the rock, on a sheer cliff, two stones appear to hover in midair, connected to the cliff face, giving the impression that they might fall at any moment—this is called the Immortals’ Bridge. On clear moonlit nights, faint sounds of music are said to drift from the bridge, legend has it that immortals gather there to drink and make music.

A short climb up from Shangfeng Temple leads to an ancient forest of oddly shaped trees. Due to the high altitude and cold climate, snow and ice persist here from early winter to late spring, often breaking off tender branches. To survive, most trees here grow twisted and gnarled, appearing bulky and coiled. Behind the woods lies the Sunset-Watching Platform, built during the Yuan Dynasty, covering about one acre. From this platform, visitors can enjoy spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
