Juying Garden – Former Site of the CCP Delegation Residence at the Nanyue Guerrilla Cadre Training Class is a cultural heritage site protected by Hunan Province, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

The former site of the CCP Delegation Residence at the Nanyue Guerrilla Cadre Training Class is located at Group 5, Hengyue Neighborhood Committee, Zhurong Subdistrict Office, Nanyue District, Hengyang City (Juying Garden).

From February 1939 to March 1940, the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang jointly held a Guerrilla Cadre Training Class in Nanyue. The CPC Central Committee decided that Ye Jianying would be in charge, leading a number of cadres and staff members to participate in the training and work. The CCP delegation’s residence was set up in a private estate called “Juying Garden,” located outside the west gate of the ancient town of Nanyue. The estate was enclosed by walls, with a pond in front and orange trees providing shade within. It was no more than a hundred meters away from both the mountain road leading to the Bible School and the former residence of He Jian downhill. During their time in Nanyue, the CCP delegation led by Ye Jianying established six principles for their comrades: firm stance, hardworking style, humble attitude, simple life, modest learning, and strict discipline. They required all staff to ensure that nothing they said or did would harm the image of the Party. The trainees of the Guerrilla Cadre Training Class mainly came from officers of various theater units across the country and young students recruited from different regions. The teaching materials used in the class were primarily Mao Zedong’s “Strategic Issues in Guerrilla War Against Japan” and Zhu De and Peng Dehuai’s “Guerrilla Tactics Against the Enemy.” Ye Jianying took on busy teaching and leadership duties at the class and personally lectured on “Introduction to Guerrilla Warfare.” Ye Jianying and the CCP instructors particularly emphasized “teaching by example,” “unity of knowledge and action,” and “unity between the military and civilians,” while stressing the importance of maintaining confidence to fight the war to the very end. On one occasion, when discussing the relationship between the military and civilians, he used the metaphor of fish and water to illustrate that waging guerrilla warfare must rely closely on the masses. To mobilize the entire nation for the anti-Japanese resistance, Ye Jianying also placed great emphasis on the motivational role of artistic propaganda. At the time, renowned figures in literature and the arts such as the writer Guo Moruo and the dramatist Tian Han gathered in Nanyue, mobilizing the masses extensively and promoting the anti-Japanese salvation movement. Even Kazuo Koshiro of the Japanese Communist Party gave lectures to the trainees on “An Analysis of Japanese Militarists and Democratic Struggles Within Japan.”

A total of three sessions of the Guerrilla Cadre Training Class were held, each lasting three months, training over 3,000 anti-Japanese guerrilla cadres. These individuals were equipped with the skills to engage in guerrilla warfare, sabotaging enemy railways, roads, and communication facilities, launching surprise attacks and ambushes, and becoming the backbone of guerrilla forces. They effectively fought against the Japanese invaders on various battlefields across the country.

The Nanyue Guerrilla Cadre Training Class was a great achievement of the Anti-Japanese National United Front and a cradle jointly nurtured by the two parties to cultivate anti-Japanese military talent. Juying Garden holds significant importance in China’s war of resistance history.

Juying Garden – Former Site of the CCP Delegation Residence at the Nanyue Guerrilla Cadre Training Class was designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site by the People’s Government of Hunan Province in January 2011; in April 2012, it was recognized as a Hengyang Municipal Patriotic Education Base by the Publicity Department of the Hengyang Municipal Committee.
