The Hu Family Courtyard in Shanmuchang is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Hu Family Courtyard is located in Shanmuchang Village, Youtingxu Town. Built in the early Qing Dynasty, it is a typical enclosed courtyard-style building with flush gable roofs found in southern Hunan. The founding ancestor, Hu Yanlin, settled here during the Shunzhi era after moving from Chujianxu (now part of Lengshuitan District). Hu Yanlin had three sons—Jinxiang, Yinxiang, and Zai’an—who all struck it rich and built the Hu Family Courtyard. After several hundred years of reproduction, the Hu descendants multiplied and the courtyard was expanded accordingly, forming a large ancient architectural complex. The Hu Family Courtyard mainly consists of individual structures including the Jinxiang Ancestral House, Yinxiang Ancestral House, Zai’an Ancestral House, the Hu Clan Ancestral Hall, and the Qingyun Pagoda, with a total construction area of over 8,400 square meters. It is very well preserved, and the villagers have a strong awareness of heritage protection.

The courtyard is situated in the center of the village, fronted by vast, flat fields. The Huangxi Stream, mentioned in the writings of Liu Zongyuan, flows past the village, and the Qingyun Pagoda stands beside the Huangxi River, creating a uniquely beautiful landscape. To the east and west of the village lie expansive fields, while ancient trees tower behind it.

The Hu Family Courtyard features a grand layout and imposing structure, serving as a model of Qing-era residential architecture in Lingling District. It organically connects a network of corridors, lanes, and pavilions, scientifically addressing issues such as ventilation, lighting, fire prevention, and drainage. Its gates and walls are adorned with carvings of auspicious animals and floral patterns, reflecting distinctive characteristics and the fashion of the time. The Hu Family Courtyard is an important cultural relic exemplifying the design and development of ancient residences in southern Hunan, possessing significant historical, cultural, artistic, and scientific research value.

On October 7, 2019, the Hu Family Courtyard in Shanmuchang was included in the eighth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units.
