Datonghu National Wetland Park

Datonghu National Wetland Park is a national-level wetland park.

On December 31, 2014, the State Forestry Administration approved the pilot construction of Hunan Datonghu National Wetland Park, which mainly includes the entire Datonghu Lake, the Jinpen River, and the entire Laohekou Canal, with a planned total area of 9,906.9 hectares.

Datonghu has long been known as the "Number One Lake in Sanxiang." It borders East Dongting Lake to the east, connects to South Dongting Lake to the south, flows toward Pinghu Lake to the west, and receives water from the Ouchi River to the north. Its extensive waterways have earned it the name "Datonghu" (Great Connecting Lake). It is the heart of Dongting Lake and the largest inland freshwater lake in Hunan Province.

Hunan Datonghu National Wetland Park is built upon the wetland ecological resources of Datonghu, with a core focus on protecting the water quality and ecological functions of the natural lake. It emphasizes ecological education and eco-leisure, integrating the display of wetland functions and culture, wetland scientific research, monitoring and public education, and flood regulation and storage into a single national-level wetland park.

The wetland park features distinct lake characteristics, rich cultural heritage, and superior geographical location, making it an ideal destination for eco-tourism and leisure vacations, as well as an excellent base for science education, scientific research, teaching internships, birdwatching, and environmental education for youth.
