Pomegranate Red Village Scenic Area

Pomegranate Red Village Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

Pomegranate Red Village, under the jurisdiction of Dongxihu District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province, was once an obscure and remote small village located on Cihui Street, Dongxihu District, Wuhan City, Hubei Province. The village has over 200 households and more than 200 acres of arable land, with its main industries being vegetable cultivation, as well as strawberry and grape farming.

In 2005, the construction of a new socialist countryside brought unprecedented development opportunities to Pomegranate Red Village. A new development direction was quickly determined — to establish an eco-friendly rural community, letting the blooming red pomegranates spread throughout the village and become its iconic symbol. Farmhouses were designed in the Huizhou architectural style featuring "white walls, black tiles, and horse-head walls." The village’s industries focused on “eating, staying, picking, touring, fishing, and leisure,” highlighting the characteristics of rural agritourism. Soon after, Pomegranate Red Village was included in Wuhan’s “Home Action” pilot village program. The village invited experts to plan landscaping and scenic spots, and organized trips for villagers to study tourism project development experiences at the East Lake Plum Garden as well as in Jiangsu, Shanghai, and Chengdu — learning from others to forge its own unique identity.

In just over two years, Pomegranate Red Village underwent a remarkable transformation: muddy paths became wide concrete roads, dilapidated farmhouses turned into quaint buildings, and old cottages were renovated into cozy guest rooms.

The exterior renovation rate of villagers’ houses reached 100%, and the village road pavement rate hit 100%. Facilities such as electricity, telecommunications, cable TV, running water, and solar water heaters became available in every household. A cultural and leisure square covering over 4,000 square meters, along with an exhibition hall, meeting rooms, a clinic, a library, and a police office, were all established. The production and living environment for villagers improved dramatically.

While building the new village, Pomegranate Red Village also explored three economic development paths: first, encouraging households to engage in diversified businesses such as running farmhouse restaurants, inns, tea houses, chess clubs, and selling handicrafts; second, developing the largest national-level pollution-free vegetable planting base in Central China; and third, using internet informatization to boost the circulation and sales of agricultural products.

Since the “National Day” holiday in 2005, Pomegranate Red Village has received 550,000 visitors and generated tourism revenue of 7.8 million yuan. In 2008, the per capita net income of farmers in the village reached 15,000 yuan, nearly four times that of 2004. Villagers say: houses have turned into “silver estates,” and vegetable fields have become “green banks.”

Standing on the winding embankment of the Han River, one can see the Huizhou-style houses of Pomegranate Red Village standing in neat rows, lush pines and cypresses providing shade, fruits and vegetables filling the air with fragrance, flower stands and scenic spots dotted across the fields, and birds flocking to the green riverbanks. Visitors who come here, listening to birds chirping and watching pomegranates bloom, cannot help but be enchanted by the idyllic scenery and moved by the warm and hospitable villagers.
