The church was built in 1931, funded by church members at the time, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of British missionary Griffith John and the 70th anniversary of his preaching in Hankou, hence it was originally named “Griffith John Church.” The church covers a land area of 530 square meters, with a total construction area of 1,911 square meters. The upper part of the church consists of the sanctuary and the choir loft, which can accommodate 800 to 1,000 worshippers. During the War of Resistance against Japan, when the Japanese army occupied Wuhan, Griffith John Church was taken over by the Japanese military. After the war, the church was renovated and worship services resumed. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, as the Three-Self Patriotic Movement of Christianity progressed, the board of directors of Griffith John Church, responding to the requests of believers, renamed it “Aiguang Church.” During the Cultural Revolution, religious activities at Glory Church were suspended. On October 30, 1980, a Thanksgiving worship service was held on Thanksgiving Day, marking the restoration of regular religious activities. Glory Church has since become a venue for gatherings, worship, and religious activities for Christians across the city. Weekly services include a main service at 9:30 AM and an evening service at 7:00 PM on Sundays, a gathering at 8:30 AM on Mondays, choir practice at 7:00 PM on Wednesdays, Bible study at 7:00 PM on Thursdays, and a doctrinal class starting at 7:00 PM on Fridays.
