Mohe, located at the northernmost tip of China, is known as "China's Arctic." Situated on the southern bank of the Heilongjiang River, the China-Russia border river at 53°N latitude, Mohe remains cold like winter for most of the year, with summer lasting only about a month. Arctic Village is the northernmost settlement in Mohe County and also the northernmost town in China. It is the only place in China where you can see the aurora borealis. In winter, the "Arctic Village" is a vast expanse of snow, with thousands of miles frozen and blanketed in snow — a true northern spectacle. The speeding horse-drawn sleighs add a unique charm that leaves every traveler enchanted.
From December 21 to December 23, 2012, the China Arctic Village 2012 National Winter Hiking Conference will be grandly held in Arctic Village, Mohe County, Heilongjiang Province. This event, approved by the General Administration of Sport of China, is a classic mass outdoor activity jointly organized by the Mountaineering Sports Management Center of the General Administration of Sport of China and the Heilongjiang Provincial Sports Bureau. At that time, over 200 outdoor enthusiasts from across the country will come to Mohe and Arctic Village to hike in the Arctic Village, seek out China’s “northernmost” point, and experience the charm of winter outdoor sports under extreme cold conditions.
The hiking route of the China Arctic Village 2012 National Winter Hiking Conference fully embodies the “northernmost” theme. Hikers will start from the Arctic Village Square in Mohe, and led by guides, trek southward along the China-Russia border river to China’s northernmost sentry post, then head northward to find landmarks such as the Arctic Village’s iconic stone tablet, the Arctic Village’s first hostel for hikers, China’s northernmost post office, China’s northernmost school, China’s northernmost pole, 99 kinds of northernmost signs, China’s northernmost household, and China’s northernmost supermarket (also a photo spot). They will then return to the Arctic Village Square along the Heilongjiang Riverbank, covering a total hiking distance of 16 kilometers.
The content of this National Winter Hiking Conference is rich and colorful. In addition to hiking in China’s northernmost Arctic Village, there will also be snow activities and entertainment such as sledding and ice slides, as well as camping experiences that test one’s limits in extreme cold. Selected participants will set up snow igloos at the Arctic Village Square and camp inside them, experiencing China’s lowest temperatures and challenging human limits to set a new record for camping in the lowest temperatures in China. Successful challengers will be awarded certificates. Additionally, the “National Winter Outdoor Sports Development Forum” will be the grand finale of the hiking conference. Dr. Zhang Zhijian, Secretary-General of the Chinese Mountaineering Association, will deliver an important speech at the forum.
