Navy 106 Warship

The "Xi’an" (Hull Number 106) destroyer is the second vessel of China’s first-generation missile destroyers—the Type 051 missile destroyer (referred to by NATO as the "Luda I class"). It was built by the Dalian Shipyard, launched in September 1970 at the Dalian Shipyard, commissioned in January 1971, and officially joined the combat fleet of the People’s Liberation Army Navy North Sea Fleet in November 1974. It was formally named the "Xi’an" in December 1986.

The ship is 132 meters long, 12.8 meters wide, and has a mast height of 29.9 meters. Its power system consists of four high-pressure steam boilers, two steam turbines delivering 72,000 horsepower, and five generator sets. Its main weaponry includes: two twin 130mm main guns, four twin 37mm naval guns, four twin 25mm naval guns, two triple missile launchers, two 12-barrel rocket depth charge launchers, and four depth charge launchers.

Suo Desheng, the tenth and final political commissar of the "Xi’an", proudly stated during the ship’s decommissioning and flag-lowering ceremony that over its 36 years of service, the "Xi’an" had safely sailed 147,000 nautical miles, clocked 11,500 operational hours, received six inspections by Party and state leaders, hosted visits from two foreign heads of state, and participated in 21 major combat readiness exercises including the South Pacific ballistic missile test, the "9010" live-force exercise, and "Sacred – 2001". Throughout its 36-year service, the ship experienced zero major accidents or incidents and recorded no casualties—an achievement extremely rare in the history of the world’s major naval combat vessels.

On September 29, 2007, the warship that had patrolled the seas for over 30 years bid farewell to the vast blue waters and was decommissioned. On October 22 of the same year, it was handed over to the Wuhan Naval University of Engineering to serve as a training and teaching platform, continuing to contribute to maritime defense in a unique way. The Xi’an is moored at Pier 20 of Wuhan Passenger Port and will be permanently stationed in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River. It opened to the public in February 2008.
