Wuhan Children's Library

Founded in March 1958 and operating independently since 1987, Wuhan Children's Library is situated in the city center. Its main building, a Western-style structure that once housed the Jincheng Bank before liberation, became the city’s reading and activity center for children after the library was established. Guided by the mission of “serving children and socialism” and upholding the principle of “readers first, service foremost,” the library consistently prioritizes social impact. Leveraging its rich collection of resources, it offers a wide range of services—including lending, reference consultations, bookmobile programs, reading activities, children’s quality training, and reading guidance—to provide comprehensive, high-quality services for children and youth workers. The library has achieved remarkable results, earning accolades multiple times from the Ministry of Culture and provincial and municipal cultural authorities. It has been recognized twice as a National First-Class Children’s Library, as well as a National Model Library and a Readers’ Favorite Library. It has also been designated by the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government as an Extracurricular Education Base for Students and a Patriotic Education Base. Due to the limited space of the original building, which could no longer meet the needs of its development, and in line with the guidelines from the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council on strengthening the ideological and moral development of minors, the Wuhan Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government invested over 12 million yuan to renovate and repurpose the former Wuhan Library building on Nanjing Road in Hankou—an over 5,000-square-meter, European-style structure originally housing the Hankou Commercial Bank and a protected historical building—into the new Wuhan Children's Library. With the care and support of city leaders, the new Wuhan Children's Library officially opened on December 12, 2004. The new building restores the historical façade, boasts a grand presence, spacious interiors, ample lighting, an elegant environment, comprehensive services, excellent facilities, and a rich collection of literature, providing a high-quality space for reading, learning, and extracurricular activities for children across the city.
