Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level

A four-story European-style building where, in 1927, leaders of the Chinese Communist Party such as Zhou Enlai, Qu Qiubai, Deng Xiaoping, and Li Weihan secretly resided. At the time, it was known as Delin Apartments.

The Delin Apartments were invested in and built by overseas Chinese Wang Guang. With a reinforced concrete structure, the building includes five units, with shops on the ground floor and apartments on the upper levels. At the time, it was one of the most luxurious and high-end apartment buildings within the former British Concession.

The Delin Apartments were chosen as a secret residence due to their large scale and location within the former British Concession, which later became the Special Zone No. 3 after the concession was reclaimed. As a special zone, it was not yet under the control of the Kuomintang, making it relatively safe.

After Wang Jingwei publicly -- in Wuhan, Zhou Enlai, then Secretary of the Central Military Commission of the CCP, traveled across the region during the day but continued working late into the night upon returning to the apartment. The most important tasks at the time included planning the Nanchang Uprising and the Autumn Harvest Uprising.

From here, accompanied by Chen Geng, Zhou Enlai took a boat eastward to Nanchang, Jiangxi, where he led the Nanchang Uprising.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the site served as the office and dormitory building for the Municipal Supply and Marketing Cooperative and later became the office building of the Municipal Vegetable Company, largely retaining its original appearance.

As a witness site to major revolutionary historical events in China, the Former Site of the Hankou Residence of Central Committee Leaders holds significant research value. Its unique architectural style also gives it certain architectural and artistic value.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) announced the Former Site of the Hankou Residence of Central Committee Leaders as part of the seventh batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.
