The Wuhan Flood Control Monument is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province and a patriotic education base.

Wuhan Flood Control Monument

Located in Binjiang Park, Hankou, Wuhan. In 1954, the people of Wuhan successfully fought against a massive flood on the Yangtze River, and Mao Zedong inscribed a congratulatory message. In 1969, the Hubei Provincial Committee and the Wuhan Revolutionary Committee built this monument to commemorate that inscription. The monument stands 37 meters tall, with a base covering approximately 240 square meters, and is constructed of reinforced concrete. It is an important witness to the first major flood control struggle of the people of Wuhan after the liberation. (Fifth Batch)

The Wuhan Flood Control Monument is situated on the river dike in Binjiang Park, Hankou, Wuhan. Built in 1969, it commemorates the “inscription by Comrade Mao Zedong celebrating the victory of the people of Wuhan over the 1954 flood.”

The Flood Control Monument faces the great river, with a base platform 4.9 meters high. The front and sides feature wide steps and are surrounded by railings. The main body of the monument is 37 meters tall, topped with a five-pointed red star with a diameter of 1.8 meters, beneath which are red silk and sunflower motifs surrounding a pattern of Tiananmen. The front of the monument is inlaid with milky-white marble, bearing an aluminum-gilded inscription personally written by Mao Zedong: “Celebrating the victory of the people of Wuhan over the 1954 flood, and preparing to overcome any similarly severe floods that may occur in the future.” Above the inscription, a red ceramic tile also features a portrait of Mao Zedong. The front of the base is engraved with Mao Zedong’s poem “Swimming” (“Shuidiao Getou”), while the left and right sides display large-scale bas-reliefs depicting the heroic flood-fighting efforts of the people of Wuhan. The compositions are complete, the figures vivid, and the overall momentum majestic.
