Shuochangkou Hutong
Shuochangkou Hutong is located in the northwest of Xuanwu District. It stretches from East to West, starting at Xuanwumen Outer Street and ending at Laogenggen Street. The name originates from military training and drills.
During the Ming Dynasty, there were hutongs named after generals' training grounds, such as Jiaolianchang Yi, Er, San, Si, and Wu Hutongs. The Qing Dynasty’s Bordered Blue Banner was stationed inside Xuanwumen, with barracks set up on the west side of Huai Baishu Street. During the Qing period, each banner established training grounds, drill halls, and areas for mastering horseback archery and martial skills outside their respective gates. The Qing continued the practices of the Ming. The Shuochangkou here likely served as the entrance and exit to the training ground. It later developed into a street. The characters 教 (jiao) and 校 (xiao), both meaning “training,” were used interchangeably. In 1965, it was officially named as it is today.
