Municipal Cultural Heritage Site

This theatre, with a site area of 5,034 square meters and a building area of 8,480 square meters, is of Soviet architectural style and was once a landmark of Wuhan. Among the other municipal cultural heritage sites in the same batch—most of which are over a century old—it is the youngest.

In the general sense, cultural relics should date back to at least the late Qing Dynasty or early Republican period; historically, they often feature classical Chinese styles and historical continuity. Wuhan Theatre is not only relatively young but also has a distinctly Westernized design.

Although it is a Soviet-style building, it is genuinely a “product of Wuhan.” The design was undertaken by the Central-South Architectural Design Institute. Because it was led by Chinese designers, many traditional Chinese decorative elements were incorporated in the details—for instance, the six pillars at the entrance feature capitals that unnecessarily mimic the horn-like supports found in wooden architecture. Similarly, the palace lanterns and other ornamental details prominently display classic Chinese traditional patterns.
