Monument to Dr. Sun Yat-sen

The Monument to Dr. Sun Yat-sen is a cultural relic protection unit of Hubei Province.

The Monument to Dr. Sun Yat-sen is located at the southern foot of Snake Hill within Wuchang Shouyi Park. It stands adjacent to the statues of heroes and martyrs of the Xinhai Revolution. On October 10, 1928—three years after Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s passing—comrades who participated in the Wuchang Uprising of the Xinhai Revolution built the “Monument to Premier Dr. Sun Yat-sen” and a memorial hall on the western section of Snake Hill in Wuchang to commemorate his great revolutionary achievements. The project was supervised by Xia Daonan, manager of the Wuchang Shouyi Park at the time, and He Zhengfang, a representative of wounded soldiers from the uprising. During the Anti-Japanese War, the “Memorial Hall to Premier Dr. Sun Yat-sen” on the western section of Snake Hill was destroyed, but the monument survived. In 1955, due to the construction of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, the monument was relocated to the southern slope of Snake Hill, east of the tomb of Chen Youliang. In 1994, it was moved to its current location.

The monument faces south and covers an area of 100 square meters. Its body is built from granite and stands 7 meters tall. The top of the monument has a box-like shape, while the left and right sides of the base are adorned with relief patterns of wreaths and sashes. The structure is surrounded by protective pillars and encircled with iron chains. The Monument to Dr. Sun Yat-sen features a traditional Chinese architectural style with modern elements, exuding grandeur. The front of the monument is inscribed with “Monument to Premier Dr. Sun Yat-sen” and “Completed on the National Day of the 17th Year of the Republic of China.” The back is engraved with words such as “Respectfully composed by comrades of the Wuchang Uprising, Inscription written by Zhang Zhishu of Jiangling.” The calligraphy is neat, vigorous, and solemn. At the back of the monument, surrounded by pine and cypress trees and enclosed by surrounding greenery, with floral embellishments on the ground, the landscape is refined and pleasant. In 1983, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Wuhan Municipal People's Government.
