First Revolution Square

First Revolution Square is located at Yue'ma Chang in Wuchang, with the central axis of the square running from the statue of Sun Yat-sen to the Huang Xing's Generals' Platform. Wuluo Road divides the square into northern and southern sections, with the southern end being one or two meters lower than the north. The square consists of two major axes: the north-south commemorative axis and the east-west cultural landscape axis. At the intersection of these two axes is a large fountain flower bed featuring the pattern of the 18-Star Flag, highlighting the historical significance of the 1911 Revolution.

Adjacent to the square is the Wuhan Museum of the 1911 Revolution, commonly known as the "Red Building." It is the former site of the Hubei Military Government of the Republic of China, also referred to as the former site of the Wuchang Uprising Military Government or the 1911 Revolution Military Government. It is an iconic landmark of Wuchang’s 1911 Revolution culture.

On the northern square, lush cedars and green lawns are complemented by rows of palm trees, floral beds, and winding paths, creating a vibrant and colorful scene.

On the southern square, the statues of martyrs Peng, Liu, and Yang have been recast in red sandstone, which will not erode for 1,000 years. The square’s lamps are also uniquely designed, forming a new urban attraction. When night falls and the lights are illuminated, the entire square is enveloped in a hazy white glow, while flowers and tree shadows are cloaked in a delicate veil, appearing especially mysterious and enchanting.

In 2007, First Revolution Square and its surrounding areas were integrated into a unified whole. Vehicles crossing the Yangtze River via the Yangtze River Bridge will pass through an underground tunnel beneath the square. The renovated First Revolution Square aims to highlight two major cultural tourism brands: the 1911 Revolution Cultural Zone and the Yellow Crane Tower Theme Park. The entire area of First Revolution Square includes the region south of Snake Hill, east of Hubei Theatre, north of Pengliuyang Road, and the areas on both sides of Wuchang Road, covering a total area of 120 mu, with the main square area being about 60 mu. The square consists of two major axes: the north-south commemorative axis and the east-west cultural landscape axis. On September 2000, shortly before the 90th anniversary commemorations of the 1911 Revolution, the Wuhan Geographic Names Committee officially approved the naming of First Revolution Square. Its geographical location is described as: “Located in Wuchang District, bordered by Wuchang Road and Shouyi Xincun to the east, extending south to Yue'ma Chang Middle School, west to the approach bridge of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, the intersection of Wuluo Road and Pengliuyang Road, facing Hubei Theatre, and north to the former site of the Wuchang Uprising Military Government (the Red Building), overlooking Snake Hill.”
